NEWBIAS Records proudly presents:
CARPETFACE: "PAINSTAKING ARRANGER" ft DONALD-D
DIGITAL SINGLE RELEASE & MUSIC VIDEO OUT JUNE 1st 2017.
THE BRONX, 1981
Teenage b-boy DONALD-D meets DJ Rashid and Easy AD (Cold Crush Brothers) on a youth-club basketball court. The hiphop crew “As Salaam Brothers” forms and is championed by DJ Kool Herc. DONALD D then joins Universal Zulu Nation with DJs Afrika Islam, Jazzy Jay, Superman and MC's Kid Vicious and El Jay as the group “The Funk Machine” and in 1983 goes on to host the pioneering Zulu Beats Radio Show, forms legendary crew “The B-Boys” with record releases including one of hiphop's most sampled tunes: “Rock The House” and also writes for The Fat Boys before heading over to the West Coast of America to join ICE-T's “RHYME SYNDICATE”
LONDON, 1988
An 11 year-old brought up on Smiley Culture, Santana and Curtis Mayfield records, now religiously obsessed with rap music, beatboxing and drumbeats is handed a copy of ICE-T's "Power" LP on tape - and is never quite the same again. First hearing DONALD D's voice and inimitable rhyming style on the ICE-T album-track "The Syndicate", a young CARPETFACE would soon discover RHYME SYNDICATE and count both DONALD-D and ICE-T as major musical influences going forward in terms of both rap-flow and production style.
AMSTERDAM, 2014
Now a critically acclaimed international hiphop artist in his own right, himself affiliated to UK and French Zulu Nation DJ's, CARPETFACE performs at the same club-night as DONALD-D and the two quickly strike up a bond stemming from a mutual love of old school hiphop and jazz music. Before long, their shared passions manifest in a collaboration paying homage to their musical influences and crate-digging culture.
The resulting concoction is a slinky, smoky, jazzy, funk-assed treat for Bluenote enthusiasts and Hiphop heads featuring CARPETFACE's own production and self-played drums, percussion, bass, keys and guitars, with slick, soulful rhymes from both MC's name-checking some of their favourite artists and records. The track begins with DONALD D showing respect to NYC Jazz clubs of yesteryear while Miles Davis-esque horn-melodies intricately snake around CARPETFACE's Curtis Mayfield-style soulful falsetto chorus-hook about mixtape playlists asking the listener "What's in the crates?" Bridging the gap between generations and cementing the old-school firmly with the new, this heartfelt collaboration is one of the freshest and most important contemporary celebrations of the Jazz scene's effect on Hiphop music and culture, demanding play after play.
This track also features on CARPETFACE's second solo-album "Cognitive DISS" - a true contender for this year's Mercury Music Prize, due out 17 July 2017 - Album promo available upon request
